How Much to Recite

  • The number of rak’ahs can vary, with common practices being 8 or 20 rak’ahs.
  • The dua is usually recited after the completion of the Taraweeh prayer.

Background

  • Purpose:
    • To seek closeness to Allah during the blessed month of Ramadan.
    • To gain rewards and blessings through extra prayers.
    • To listen to the recitation of the Quran during the prayer.

Hadith / Quranic Reference

  • Hadith:
    • Narrated Abu Huraira: “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, ‘Whoever prayed at night in Ramadan out of faith and for a reward, then all his previous sins would be forgiven.'” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
    • This hadith highlights the reward for performing night prayers during Ramadan.
  • Quranic Basis:
    • While there is no specific Quranic verse mandating Taraweeh prayer, the Quran encourages extra prayers and supplications, especially during Ramadan.
    • When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ About Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺.
