When, Where, and How Much to Recite

When to Recite:

  • There is no specific time for reciting these duas. You can make them whenever you feel the need – upon hearing of the death, after the burial, during times of grief, or whenever you remember the deceased.

Where to Recite:

  • Anywhere. Dua can be made anywhere that is clean and respectful.

How Much to Recite:

  • There is no set number of times. You can repeat the duas as often as you feel necessary.

Background:

The most important aspect of dua is sincerity. Make dua with a sincere heart and a genuine desire for Allah’s help and comfort. While grief is natural, it’s essential to accept Allah’s decree and to trust in His wisdom. Ask Allah for patience and strength to cope with the loss.

Hadith/Quranic Reference:

  • Quran 2:156: As mentioned above, this verse is the foundation of the Muslim response to loss: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, “Surely to Allah we belong and to Him we will ˹all˺ return.”
  • Numerous Hadith: There are many Hadith that encourage supplication for the deceased and for oneself during times of grief. These Hadith emphasize the importance of turning to Allah in all circumstances. The specific wordings of the duas mentioned above are derived from these teachings, though they may not be direct quotes of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) exact words in every instance.
